- Removing iron from water supplies can be accomplished by a variety of means, depending on the amount of iron to be removal, whether manganese is also present, and whether there are constraints of the use of chemicals. Iron in groundwater supplies is typically present as a dissolved substance (ferrous -iron). As the water is exposed to atmosphere, some of the iron is oxidized and become ferric iron – present as a suspended solid. Simple exposure to atmosphere, however, is not generally sufficient to achieve effective iron removal.
